From Berlin with precision: The next-gen 100-ball EM-30 e.MMC is here
31/03/2025 by Alexander Lenz
I’m pleased to share an important milestone in the evolution of our EM-30 100-ball e.MMC series. With the latest update, we’re not only expanding the product portfolio but also taking a significant step by moving production in-house to our Berlin facility. This development enhances both the performance of the lineup and the way we ensure its availability and quality.
In-house manufacturing for greater control
The EM-30 100-ball e.MMCs are now being manufactured at Swissbit’s own high-tech site in Berlin. This shift gives us full control over production and allows us to respond more directly to customer needs. Our Berlin facility, the only chip-on-board production site of its kind in Europe, enables:
- Enhanced supply security through independence from external production partners
- Shorter lead times thanks to direct control of the supply chain
- Greater flexibility in meeting varying customer and market requirements
- Consistent quality assurance, certified to ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, and ISO 27001
Now with BICS5 and automotive temperature options
That’s not all. Alongside our established lineup, we’re introducing new variants built on advanced BICS5 NAND technology (112-layer 3D NAND) – tailored for industrial-grade use. These versions bring higher capacities (up to 256 GB) and improved endurance, especially in pSLC mode, which achieves up to 100,000 P/E cycles – a huge leap from the 30,000 cycles of our previous BICS3 models.
And for the first time, we’re offering the EM-30 series in a 100-ball variant – along with support for automotive temperature ranges (-40 °C to +105 °C). This opens the door to applications in even tougher environments, from vehicles to outdoor or industrial edge computing.
Why 100-ball e.MMC is still the right choice
You might wonder – isn’t the 100-ball format a bit bigger than others? Yes, but there's a reason we stick with it:
- Simplified PCB routing thanks to a 1mm ball pitch (compared to 0.5mm on 153-ball).
- Fewer assembly issues like solder bridging.
- Better heat dissipation, which means higher reliability in demanding scenarios.
- More robust designs for industrial use.
A minor but meaningful update: previously exposed test pads, used during development, are now covered. This change helps prevent corrosion in harsh environments, such as those with exposure to corrosive gases.
A look ahead
With this update, we’re not just expanding a product line – we’re reinforcing Swissbit’s core promise: reliable, industrial-grade memory solutions with long-term availability. I’m proud of what our team has achieved and excited about what these improvements mean for you, our customers and partners. Whether you're building the next generation of automotive systems or need rock-solid memory for industrial automation – the EM-30 series now delivers more than ever.
Thanks for being part of this journey with us!
